Navy Seal Seduction is FINISHED!

I finally finished writing Navy Seal Seduction, my first romantic suspense book for Harlequin. Yay! This book is out in print and digital in July. I've posted an excerpt below.

The plan is now to finish the proposal due for the next romantic suspense book, and then I'll be returning to my Werewolves of Montana. Tristan's book is close to being finished. Happy 2016!

Navy Seal Seduction
copyright 2016 by Bonnie Vanak

A tall, muscled pirate in a clean white shirt and black trousers stood before her in the courtyard of Le Soleil Hotel. Scowling to hide her emotions, she stared, her heart racing as if she’d run a mile up and down the nearby mountain. Black hair cropped short, he wore a pressed white shirt, the cuffs rolled up to display tanned, muscled forearms. Smooth cheeks, strong jaw and a nose that had been broken at least once. Rugged, tough and those eyes, green as the ocean water he navigated on a mission.
Those eyes had turned smoky and dark with passion as they’d made love, and cold as the Arctic the day she’d announced she’d hired a lawyer to initiate divorce proceedings. Whoa, he still had it. Hot, hot, hot, as the locals said. Bad boy to the extreme, who made her female parts say Why, hello there!
Her female parts needed to stay quiet. This time she’d listen to her broken heart, and not her hormones, even though her heart jumped at the sight of him.
He had never been there for her before, and certainly wasn’t staying now.
Lacey managed to find her voice. “I hope this is a bad dream and I’ll wake up and find you gone.”
Her ex-husband pulled out a chair, turned it around and straddled it. “Well, darling, it seems your nightmare isn’t going away. Neither am I.”
She managed to conceal her trembling hands by wrapping her fingers tight around the beer bottle. Lacey took a deep drink, relishing the cool wash of liquid sliding down her throat. It reminded her of that time after they’d consumed several beers and then he’d kissed her and they had…
Not. Going. There.
“Go away Jarrett. If you’re here on a mission, aren’t you supposed to be invisible in your invincibility?”
He did not smile. Flickering candlelight on the table revealed the sharp angles and planes of his lean face. Jarrett looked all business.
“You’re my mission. I’m taking you out of here. I booked us on tomorrow’s early morning flight.” He glanced around. “Before the elections and before this place blows to hell.”
Jarrett, trying to be funny, except his expression was dead serious. Had he heard about the mysterious vandalism plaguing her compound? It had been a few minor incidents she’d written off as a nuisance caused by locals who didn’t like how she helped women, until last week’s truck fire.
That fire had not been a nuisance. It destroyed her best working vehicle.
She glanced around at the two other occupied tables and lowered her voice.
“Are you insane? I’m not going anywhere with you.”
“St. Marc is teetering on a coup and I’m taking you back to the States.”
She knew St. Marc intimately, shied away from the hot spots and knew how to handle herself. “Elections are in two days. I know about the violence, and know how to avoid it and soon as elections are over, things will cool down. Stop wasting your time.”
“You’re at risk of getting shot, kidnapped, or both.”
“The media exaggerates about a few protests downtown. It’s not violent here.”
Jarrett turned his head as six men carrying sinister-looking guns trotted out onto the courtyard, racing off toward the hotel disco. His mouth curved in a knowing smile.
“The president is here with his friends. He likes the disco,” she snapped.
“Do all his friends carry assault rifles?”
“It’s the latest fashion craze. Goes well with the Guayabera shirts. We do like to accessorize here on St. Marc.”
The smile dropped, replaced with a dark stare. The Look. How many times had he aimed it at her in the past? The man had a stubborn streak bigger than a US Navy destroyer. Jarrett leaned forward. “This country is eroding into civil unrest, Lace, elections or no elections. You need to get out. How many State Department warnings does it take before you’ll listen?”
Anger fisted in her stomach. “Those warnings are for the tourists who come here to do poverty tours, or sun themselves on the beaches. Not for ex-pats like me or Paul. And who the hell are you to tell me what to do? We’re no longer married.”
She was 29, no longer that wide-eyed girl who’d fallen hard and fast for the handsome Navy sailor with a wicked smile, husky laugh and skilled hands. Marlee’s Mangos was her dream now, not a life of domestic bliss with a SEAL who was gone more than he’d been home.
Gone too, when she needed him the most. Lacey clenched her beer bottle again and pushed away thoughts of the baby they’d lost. That was the past, and St. Marc was her future.

Jarrett Adler belonged to those ghosts she’d exorcised out of her life...

From werewolves and wizards to Navy Seals!

I'm changing gears...slightly. And the shift is fun! Right now I am fully immersed in writing my June 2016 Harlequin Romantic Suspense book, Navy Seal Seduction.

This is a big departure for me, as it's my first romantic suspense book. I am so happy I am trying out a new genre. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, but not that big a departure since I usually have suspense in my PNR books.

Writing straight romantic suspense is a bit of a challenge, as I'm tempted to toss in a werewolf or a Mage like I did with my Harlequin Nocturne series featuring a team of Navy Seals who were paranormals (Demon Wolf).

I love how this book is turning out. Jarrett is a very alpha Seal who is in a volatile country, trying to get his ex-wife to go home to the US, where she will be safe. But Lacey isn't budging and for a very good reason.

And Navy Seal Seduction is already up for pre-order on Amazon.

You can check it out here.

I'm not stopping with the PNR. I'll have more werewolves and wizards (Tristan's book, among them) and next month I"m hoping to release a short story/novella called Lovestruck. Lovestruck is about two dragons and Xavier, and you'll get a good insight of the wizards of the Werewolves of Montana.

That's it for now. Happy reading!

The Mating Challenge available for pre-order on Amazon Kindle

Note: I changed the cover to better reflect Aiden, who is a werewolf cowboy and a ranch owner.

For a long time alpha werewolf and ranch owner Aiden Mitchell has desired the curvy, vivacious Nikita Blakemore, alpha female of the Blakemore pack. He will have her as his mate and no other. To force her hand, Aiden maneuvers her into hosting a Mating Challenge, the ultimate warrior competition for werewolves, where males fight for the right to mate and breed with a female alpha. Fiercely protective of his future mate, Aiden will do anything to make her his own, even fight to the death.

Masquerading as her twin sister, Nia Blakemore knows she is the one Aiden wants in his bed. Nia has dreamed of the handsome cowboy sweeping her into his strong arms and consummating the passion consuming them both, even though he thinks she is Nikita, the true alpha female. Nia must try to keep Aiden from discovering the truth to protect her frailer, gentler twin. But Nia and the real Nikita hide a secret far more deadly than the charade they have pulled off for years, one that can kill Aiden and any healthy male who sets foot upon their land…

You can pre-order The Mating Challenge on Amazon by clicking here.

I will also have a short story preceding The Mating Challenge available soon. You can download it for free on my website on the Members Only page, and get the password by subscribing to my newsletter. Click here to subscribe to my newsletter.

Sale! Lower book price

Hi everyone, I'm lowering the price on both Amazon and iBooks for The Mating Seduction. This is the third book in my Werewolves of Montana series.

Lexie Walters knows she’s in big trouble. Caught trying to steal her champion horse from the sexy werewolf cowboy who purchased the mare, she’s offered a devil’s bargain. Jackson Palmer will let her ride Diamond in an upcoming barrel race if Lexie spends seven nights in his bed. Desperate to win the rodeo prize money that can save her pack’s ranch, Lexie agrees. But there’s no way she’ll become his mate, no matter how much Jackson ’s touch arouses her.

Ever since Lexie left for college Jackson Palmer has waited to capture the curvy Lupine werewolf’s heart. Now she’s back in his life and he’s determined to claim her. Only Lexie can tame his wild wolf side. If Jackson doesn’t find a mate in two weeks, he’ll get kicked out of the Mitchell pack.

Lexie will do everything to resist Jackson ’s seductive charms. But she doesn’t realize there’s a far more serious threat than losing her virginity to this powerful and determined Lupine. Someone wants to prevent her from racing, only this someone will not stop until she’s off the rodeo circuit for good…

Happy BDSM Day

Happy Valentine's Day! Fifty Shades of Grey releases today and I'm not going to see it.  I'm staying home with the dogs and working on Redemption, a new Werewolves of Montana Mating Mini, while DH works on the trains at the local park. Yeah, our lives are soooo fifty shades of exciting, LOL.

And tonight to celebrate VD day (that sounds terrible, VD day. Veneral Disease day?) we are grilling steaks instead of paying too much for eating dinner out. A bottle of white wine is chilling in the fridge and we are going to have a fire in the fire pit. And relax, toast each other and our marriage (20 years this year!). No whips, bondage or floggers for us. But he DID purchase a VD gift for tonight... drum roll...

A toasting fork. For marshmallows! It's pictured above. Yeah, I love that man of mine. He knows what I need. LOL! Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Obsession, now available for pre-order!

OBSESSION, Werewolves of Montana Mating Mini #2

He comes to her in a dark dream promising sensual pleasure - sexy, tempting and dangerous. Raphael is an obsessed wolf with one thing on his mind. He wants Jessica naked beneath him, and nothing will stop him until he has her in his bed.

Jessica Tyrell is a Lupine with a mission – find her missing brother, her only living blood relative. Now, with the help of magick crystals, her dream can come true. All she needs is to hack into restricted records at her friend Alexa’s ranch. The only thing standing in her way is Raphael Amador, head of pack security. The wolf wants her with the same ruthless intent he displays in protecting the pack. Jessica knows if she surrenders to his sensual allure, she could lose her soul to Raphael.

Haunted by his tortured past and determined to never love again, Raphael finds his passion awakened by the lovely redhead who threatens his control. He has vowed to seek revenge against the man who killed his intended mate and scattered his pack. Can he experience a night of pleasure with the lovely redhead and pursue his goal of revenge, or will Jessica capture his broken heart?

Excerpt from Obsession copyright 2015 by Bonnie Vanak

He parked a lean hip against the tree’s trunk and folded his muscular arms. In his red flannel shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to display tanned forearms, and faded jeans with scuffed Western boots, he looked like an ordinary cowboy. But there was nothing ordinary about this Lupine.
Curls the color of blackest night spilled down to his collar. His strong jaw was covered by a close-trimmed beard, and a crisp mustache framed a mouth far too sensual for a man. But there was nothing sensual about the sharp, angular features of his face nor the darkness of those brown eyes.
Those eyes seemed ageless, and ancient pain lurked in their depths as he gazed down at her.
Jessica studied the acres of green pasture, the gleaming buildings, and thought about the expensive motor cars parked in the garage. “It must be nice to be wealthy,” she mused.
“There are worse things than having no money,” he said quietly.
“Easy to say when you have plenty of it.”
“I’d trade all the money in the world to regain what I’ve lost.”
He looked dark and dangerous and yet he had an air of vulnerability.
            “What did you lose?”
Raphael shook his head. “Another time, little one. Perhaps one night I will share that information.”
“You don’t believe in sharing during the day?”
His gaze became hooded. “With you, I would much rather share…things… at night.”
Jessica felt her entire body flare with heat. Every time he gazed at her with those bedroom eyes, she felt a jolt of sensual awareness.
Her Lupine nature, with all its raging hormones and sexual need, howled for release.
But his seductive gaze wasn’t centered on her face now. He stared at her curls.
“What’s wrong? Never seen a redhead before?”
“Not of that color. I have met some red wolf Lupines, but their coloring is darker.” Raphael left the tree, approached her. Before she could squeak a protest, he wrapped a strand of her hair around his index finger.
“It is like living flame that does not burn. But do you burn, Jessica? Burn with the desire all our kind possesses?”

Christmas is coming!

And I'm not ready. The tree isn't up, and I'm busy writing. I'm finishing OBSESSION, the next Werewolves of Montana Mating Mini. I really like Raphael, who is tortured and dark and dangerous and very sexy. A true alpha. Jess is his perfect match.

In the meantime in our household, things are as usual. Soon as we drag in the boxes of decorations, our Shih Tzu, Cookie, will dive in, thinking "That's MINE!"

SEDUCTION is being published this week! I'll post the links when they are finalized. Have a good one!

If all goes well, SEDUCTION will be published this week. Finally! In the meantime, I'm finishing OBSESSION, the next Werewolves of Montana Mating Mini (January 2015).

Here's a preview:

“Right now I burn with a tremendous desire.” Jessica tugged her hair away from his loose grasp. “A desire for you to stop touching me.”

He arched a brow. “That is not touching you, little one. When I touch you, you will know it, and be unable to resist.”

Please don't buy my Ellora's Cave books

History, like bad sausage, repeats itself.

Once more I am finding myself in the midst of another publishing nightmare; watching one of my publishers slowly spiral downward. Back in 2011, it was Dorchester. I had written a series of 7 historical romances set in Egypt. They owed me money, not a lot, but enough. They had sold the rights to one of my books to another country and I never saw a nickel. My wonderful agent finally did get my rights back and I published those books myself.

And then I cautioned myself to be careful when signing future publishing contracts.

I have books with Ellora's Cave. I'm not going to get into the lawsuit EC filed against Dear Author, and the chilling effect it has. You can read about the lawsuit here and here.

There have been rumors flying around like snow in Colorado on a winter's day. One says that EC may out all authors who write under a pseudonym. That could jeopardize their day jobs.

I have a day job in addition to writing books. I work for a large charity. I'll out myself here before anyone else can.

My pseudonym is Blair Valentine.

I won't live in fear anymore. But I imagine for some authors, the thought of being exposed can be hellish, especially if they hold jobs in the public sector, such as teaching.

The irony of the EC mess is that I don't want my rights back because I have not been paid, like author Avril Ashton. Avril relies upon her writing income to pay the rent.

I bought Avril's new indie book to support her. I will do what I can to support my fellow authors who are in a bind. I know the fear of having the bills come due and being jobless.

I am not like other EC authors. I have been paid regular royalty checks. Most of my checks amount to around, oh, $6.

$6. Just enough to buy two cans of dog food for my sick Shih Tzu, Holly (pictured here). Definitely not enough to help pay for the $5,000 in chemo treatments to treat her breast cancer.

I want my EC books back because I want to rewrite them to make them stronger. Better. As an author, I am constantly evolving in my writing.

My first EC book was published in 2005. It was fun and exciting to write for EC. They were an erotica publisher who made tremendous strides in the industry, long before Fifty Shades of Whatever Color. I had an editor, and when the book was released, EC did a terrific job promoting it. I didn't have to do much to promote the book. My first royalty check, paid monthly!!! was a healthy four figures.  I was blissful, especially since my "regular" publisher at the time was Dorchester, who paid when the moon was turning into green cheese.

I wrote more stories for them as Blair Valentine. They were different, and had humor. Because I was worried about publishing erotic romance under my real name, I chose a pseudonym. These books were sexier than anything I'd ever written. I did NOT want anyone to find out Bonnie Vanak was writing books where the heroine had sex with ten guys.

And then a couple of years later, I sold EC another book in that series. When I looked at how much that book was priced on Amazon, I scratched my head. Huh?

Those royalty checks began dwindling. No matter. By now I was writing for Harlequin, who did pay twice a year, and paid on time.

In 2013, I started self-publishing a series called the Werewolves of Montana. Those books were fun to write, and sexy as my EC books.

I didn't pay much attention to my EC books, but did ask for my rights back last year.

Crickets.

I removed the books from my website and started to divorce myself from Blair Valentine.

About 10 days ago, I asked again to get the rights back to my EC books. I got a standard reply. I doubt I will ever see those books again, which truly sucks big donkey donuts because I could take those books, rework them, and release them myself.

Watching this whole EC mess unfold is like watching a train speeding toward a wreck, knowing you have a good friend on board, but you are helpless to stop the wreck. All you can do is step away from the tracks and try to move on.  I did this before with Dorchester, and now I'm doing it again with EC.

I don't want readers to buy any books written by Blair Valentine. It's my small way of protesting what's been going on. If you really want to support my writing, buy a book for which I have contributed a story. LAST HERO STANDING features 11 sexy, heroic stories by bestselling authors. We got together to publish this book to raise money for my dear friend Pamela Clare, who is fighting breast cancer. The book is available for pre-order October 1.

I work a demanding day job five days a week. I travel to developing countries to help poor families who can't even scrape together money to buy a meal, let alone an EC book. And I write romance. My focus has been producing stories in my Werewolves of Montana series that my readers will enjoy. Lately it's been tough, between the day job and Holly's cancer treatments, to write. I finally DID finish Seduction, a new book in the series, and hope to have it available in a few weeks.

And as a gift to readers, I'm working on a new special Members Only webpage that will feature two free short stories. One is an original in my Werewolves of Montana series. It's about Tristan, the Silver Wizard. I wanted to gift my readers with a free read because they have been so supportive and patient while waiting for the next story.

Readers are amazing. And so are bloggers. Some I don't care for, but they have the right to voice their opinion. I just ignore them, because I'm too busy trying to WRITE books. I think it is cool that the internet gives readers a forum in which to express their opinions of books.

What's not cool is what's going on. So not cool.

If you are an author and you are considering a publishing contract, take a deep breath and slow down. Like they say in the business, no agent is better than a bad agent and the same goes for publishing contracts. No contract is better than one that ties up your rights until the moon turns into green cheese.

Read Carolyn Jewel's excellent post here on getting your rights back and what to do before you sign that publishing contract.

And look before you leap before giving your book to a publisher. Read that contract carefully. Hire a literary attorney if you do not have an agent. Protect your rights... because you might just be leaping into the path of an oncoming train.

RWA San Antonio

I'm leaving Tuesday for San Antonio and RWA and as usual, there's a million errands to run and stuff to do. Yesterday I went to the hairdresser and said those three little words many women sometimes regret: "Cut it off."

Oh yeah, I got a hair cut.  It hasn't been this short in years. Then I looked at my lost locks on the floor and told her, "Glue it back on."

DH likes it. It's not a short short short cut, but short enough to make a difference. I needed a change.

Today is a rush rush day, but I'm making time to have lunch at a Greek restaurant with a good friend, cuddle with the dogs on the sofa, scribbling notes about the WIP and organizing my clothing so I can pack 50 outfits into a suitcase that will allow only 50 pounds. I was looking forward to bringing my pink Coach purse with me to RWA, but the strap broke. I saw the guy who fixes my computers and suddenly, WHAP! The strap on my purse breaks. I told him, "Is this a sign that I will be owing you more money?"

Bummer about the purse because I bought it for myself to celebrate making the NY Times earlier this year, a major dream come true! I've always wanted a Coach bag, but could not justify spending that kind of money. And then we were in Key West for my birthday and there was a SALE! Fifty percent off at the Coach shop! So I bought my purse.

DH took it to the local Coach shop and they are repairing it for free. Then DH felt bad for me because I wouldn't have the purse at RWA, so what did he do? My amazing hubby bought me ANOTHER Coach purse as a surprise gift! He told me he wanted me to have that symbol of my success at RWA.

What a sweetheart!

Oh yeah, the Coach purse is a symbol of success for me, a personal triumph. But what matters more is that I have been a published author for more than 10 years and I'm finally, finally able to see my writing as a real career and a business where I can succeed. I've published many books, and I've worked hard, but never as hard as I've worked this past year. And it's paying off, finally! I have a fun series called the Werewolves of Montana and I have my Harlequin Nocturne books. I am a hybrid author, publishing both indie books and books with a traditional NY publisher.

Oh, and I have a day job. A full-time demanding day job where I travel to poor countries. A week after I return from San Antonio, I will be in Guatemala, visiting poor families. None of them have Coach purses. To them, success is a roof over their head that doesn't leak, food on the table and a education for their children.

That's why the day job is important to me... I want to help make the world a better place and help others. And through visiting families in desperate need of help, and writing fundraising appeals to help the poor,  I'm succeeding in that goal as well.

I will be at the RWA  "Readers for Life" Literacy Autographing will be on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in the 3rd floor ballroom. Stop by to see me!

Update on The Mating Rite release

It's getting close! I'm anticipating a release date for The Mating Rite in about 3 weeks. This book is about 93,000 words! Here is the blurb:

Ten years ago, Darius Bryant fell in love and lost his mate before they consummated their union. He mourned her death and moved on, but innocent, carefree Samantha always possessed his heart, no matter how many women he had in his bed. When the sexy werewolf shifter discovers Samantha is alive, Darius becomes determined to claim her as his forever mate. He must convince the now-cynical Samantha that her heart, body and soul belong to him.

Samantha Evers spent years waiting for Darius to return, and thought he’d forgotten his promise to make her his own. She’s vowed to live as a human, for she fears the sexual savagery of the wolf life. Now Darius is back and the only act that will seal them together is the intense sexual bonding of the mating rite. She will fight hard to resist Darius’ sensual allure and his tender words of passion. But a far greater problem awaits them both when they discover someone wants Samantha out of Darius’ life for good, and will stop at nothing until she is dead…

This is my first Werewolves of Montana book that will be in print through Amazon's CreateSpace. It's a new, exciting venture for me, publishing my own print copies. You can read an excerpt here.

Other upcoming releases include:

The Mating Intent (Book 4.5 of my Werewolves of Montana series).  June 2014.  This is the story of Gabriel, a Florida panther shifter, and a dark elf.

Happy reading!
